Australia

Anthony Schiliro explored Australia with a camera in hand, capturing its wild landscapes, urban energy, and unique sense of space.

First Impressions of Australia

Anthony’s journey through Australia took him from modern cityscapes to remote natural wonders. He traveled through Sydney, Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road, and parts of the Outback. Each location offered something different—light, color, mood, and rhythm.

He came to Australia expecting wide landscapes and left with portraits of a country that shifts from city to silence in minutes.

Sydney

In Sydney, Anthony focused on structure and contrast. The city’s mix of beach life, modern architecture, and heritage sites gave him a full range of subjects.

He photographed:

  • The Sydney Opera House at dawn
  • Ferries crossing under the Harbour Bridge
  • Surf culture at Bondi Beach
  • Long exposures of waves against sandstone cliffs
  • Reflections of skyscrapers in glass and puddles

He especially enjoyed blending natural elements with sharp urban lines—sand and concrete, sea and steel.

Melbourne

Melbourne offered a further layered, textured experience. Anthony found inspiration in the city’s artsy neighborhoods, alleyways, and coffee culture.

Some of his favorite photos include:

  • Bold street art in Fitzroy
  • Candid portraits in bustling laneways
  • Overhead shots of café life
  • Vintage signage in Carlton
  • The quiet symmetry of trams in motion

Melbourne taught him to look closely and move slowly—there’s art in the ordinary if you pay attention.

The Great Ocean Road

Driving along the Great Ocean Road gave Anthony a chance to reconnect with the open landscape. He was drawn to the coastline’s dramatic cliffs, shifting skies, and natural formations like the Twelve Apostles.

His camera captured:

  • Rugged sea stacks at golden hour
  • Mist hanging over the eucalyptus trees
  • Coastal trails winding into nowhere
  • Layers of ocean, rock, and cloud

The raw power of nature in this region reminded him why photography matters—to preserve fleeting beauty.

The Outback

The Australian Outback was like nothing Anthony had ever seen. Vast, red, silent. He spent time near Uluru and surrounding desert areas, waking early and waiting for the light.

He focused on:

  • Desert textures—cracked soil, dry grass, shifting sand
  • The deep red glow of Uluru at sunrise
  • Minimalist compositions of open land
  • Shadows stretching across desert rocks
  • Stars above with long exposure settings

The Outback made him rethink distance, silence, and stillness. It was less about taking the perfect photo and more about being fully present.

What He Loved Photographing Most

Across Australia, Anthony Schiliro was drawn to contrast:

  • Modern architecture vs. ancient land
  • Crowded beaches vs. empty plains
  • Street life vs. open roads
  • Intensity of light and shadow

Australia became a place of balance for him—where photography wasn’t just about what he saw, but how he felt in the space between moments.
